How to Maintain Peak Physical Performance in a Career that Saves Others

When it comes to firefighting, military, law enforcement, and other special force training, the work doesn’t stop once your career begins. But for some it’s easy to lose sight of the physique they initially trained for, which can potentially hinder the job they were called to complete.

“Once you’re in it, it’s easy to get lost in the job,” says Brandon Green, lieutenant with the Baraboo, Wisconsin, Fire Department and lead trainer for the department’s tactical fitness program. Green is also the founder of Pulse Fitness and Training and has been coaching and training for 15 years.

“I don’t believe in the concept of ‘getting in shape,’” adds Green, “Getting in shape means you’re only pushing your body when you need to –it’s associated with getting to a certain point and then stopping. I believe in training.  Training means you’re constantly working, whether it’s for preventative health measures or quality of life.”

Tactical Training Gets You Ready for the Job

From tactical training to designing tactical fitness programs, Green is dedicated to ensuring professionals in the field are in peak condition “for when the bell rings.”

“It’s hard when I watch veteran firefighters that want to continue in their career, but physically can’t,” says Green. This is when training becomes more important than simply getting in shape for a short period of time. Tactical fitness isn’t about workouts – it’s about work. That’s why Green creates programs that carry over into real life situations.

Tactical Fitness is about fitness that may one day be the difference between life and death for you or someone you are trying to help within your profession. Not only do first responders need to develop optimal health and fitness, they also need to develop the ability to react and think clearly under stress. Preparing mentally and physically for these situations through tactical training is one of the best ways to achieve this.

Countdown to Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Now that 4 years have passed since the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, it’s time for another grand display of athletics, this time in Tokyo, Japan. Of the more than 30 sports to compete in at this year’s summer games, gymnastics stands out as one of the most expansive, and competitive.

For gymnasts, the Olympics are the zenith of their career, the place where years of hard work, dedication and talent lead to, and this year’s games in Tokyo are sure to bring a new generation of glory to the eyes of the entire world.

A Lifetime of Training

16-years-old is the average age of Olympic gymnast on the U.S. women’s team, so you can imagine how young training begins to become “Olympic-ready.” Most prospective Olympians start between the formative years of 2 and 5 years-old, which USA Gymnastics claims is the optimal age for gymnasts to learn how their bodies move prior to progressing into advanced classes.

From there, young gymnasts choose a gym along with a coach that will train them for the Talent Opportunity Program (TOP) to hopefully participate in the TOP’s testing and training camps. In order to pass through these rigorous programs, prospective Olympians should have exceptional talent and abilities by the age of 10.

Once a young gymnast meets these benchmarks and begins racking up success at competitions, they may catch the attention of national scouts — but even then, elite gymnasts still devote 20-30 hours a week to their craft.

For former Olympic gymnast and gold medalist Gabby Douglas, the intense training schedule is all too familiar. In order to get ready for the 2016 games, her schedule involved waking up at the crack of dawn to begin her 6.5-hour per day training regimen split between morning and afternoon sessions.

We Sell Mats Gets You Olympic-Ready

Gyms that are capable of training future Olympians don’t settle for just any equipment; they only work with the best. If you or your young Olympian is looking to work with pro-level equipment, then check out the selection of premium gymnastics mats designed for competitive training.

As for now, we can’t wait to see the hard work pay off for all of the dedicated gymnasts at the 2020 Summer Olympics and are proud to cheer on the upcoming U.S. Gymnastics National Teams in Tokyo.

3 Tests to Find the Best Foam Mats for Kids

When you’re looking for foam mats that are ideal for your kids, you’ll have certain questions as you shop. Will this mat protect my kids from bumps and bruises? My kids spill everything… are these mats easy to clean? I’m nervous that my baby will try to put this in her mouth; how do I know these mats are safe and non-toxic?

As you can imagine, we get all these questions and more every day and want to list a few things our customers should look for when discerning if a mat is up to quality standards.

Note: All interlocking EVA foam mats are intended for ages 3 and up. This is due to a potential choking hazard posed by the interlocking tabs should they be torn or bitten off from the mats.

  1. The “Bonk” Test
In most cases, the primary reason parents shop for foam mats is to protect children from falling on hard surfaces. Caretakers want peace of mind knowing that if a child takes a spill during playtime, they’re going to be able to get right back up again without any tears. The key in this instance is the thickness of the mat.

Of course, there are no products that can keep us 100% safe from every fall, but in order to protect from minor bumps and bruises, you need a mat that is at least 3/8″ inch (10mm) thick. Mats that are thinner, such as yoga mats, are not designed for shock absorption, but rather for traction and mild padding. If your baby tips over sideways from a seated position on a 1/8″ thick yoga mat, there’s still going to be a bonk and some tears. EVA foam mats which are 3/8″ or thicker provide enough shock absorption to protect your little ones from the frequent falls that come with the territory of learning to crawl or walk.

  1. The Mess Test
Oftentimes when people think of foam, they envision squishy blocks of padding, that quickly absorb liquid spills and are difficult to keep clean. Thankfully, because EVA foam is extremely high-density, cleaning up everyday household spills is a breeze. We’ve yet to come across a spill which couldn’t be quickly wiped up with a paper towel or dissolved with a mild solution of soap and water. Even if your mats should somehow become thoroughly soaked, most of the liquid will simply wick away. The mats can then air-dry either outdoors in the sunlight, or indoors with the help of a fan.
  2. The Safety Test
Foam mats come in a variety of sizes, colors and thicknesses, but nothing is more important than making sure your family is not exposed to any dangerous or harmful materials. When shopping for mats, take the time to check the material’s safety data to ensure that the mats are BPA-free, Lead-free and completely non-toxic.You may even wish to ask about potential allergens like Latex in case anyone in your family has a sensitivity. All of We Sell Mats’ EVA foam has undergone independent third-party testing to prove that our mats are free of any dangerous materials and completely safe for household use.

As long as the mats you’re considering to purchase pass these three tests, you can feel confident you’re making a good choice for your home and family. Check out our line of EVA foam mats for stylish and cost-effective flooring for playrooms, daycares, classrooms and beyond.

Why EVA Foam?

We Sell Mats EVA Foam is perfect for Cosplayers because it’s cost-effective and one of the most workable materials. Likewise, EVA foam can be sanded and painted to create countless colors and textures. Our EVA Foam Tiles come in a variety of thicknesses including 3/8”; ½”; ¾” and 16 different colors.

Despite EVA foam’s forgiving workability, it can still take years to master the necessary techniques. Luckily for beginners, there is a vast community of Cosplay how-to video creators that can get you up to speed, like our friends Allison and Marlie at @divinecreationcosplay.
