Exercise mats for a home gym are among the most frequently requested items by people who call or email our customer service department. It’s great to have a chance to talk with customers about the specifics of their home gym because different set-ups may have different flooring needs. The great thing about a home gym is you can turn virtually any space into your own private fitness center, but the reality is that some spaces are better than others. When designing your home gym there are a number of things you want to take into consideration:
- Is the current floor carpeted? If so, what type of sub-flooring is beneath the carpet?
- Is the flooring capable of bearing the weight of your fitness equipment?
- Does any of your equipment require electricity? If so, do you have access to electrical outlets?
- Is the room in an unfinished space like a basement or garage? If so, is there any risk of flooding?
When choosing exercise mats for your home gym, these are the kinds of questions you want to ask yourself and the answers will help you determine the right kind of mat to choose! For example, if the existing room is carpeted, you might want to consider pulling up the carpet or choosing a different room. Fitness activities require a durable flooring solution and carpet is not your best option. Heavy equipment can wear through or otherwise damage your carpet, and do you really want a floor that’s going to absorb and retain all that sweat? Yuck! If you don’t have any other option but to put the home gym in a carpeted room and you don’t want to pull up the carpet, we recommend you use our Commercial Rubber Tiles which will protect your carpet from impact damage, spread the weight of your equipment across a larger surface area, and provide an impermeable barrier between your workout and the floor.
If your workout routine involves any kind of stretching or high-impact movement, we strongly recommend a high-density, anti-fatigue floor surface such as an EVA Foam Mat. An EVA Foam mat with a thickness of 1/2" to 3/4" will give you the stability and shock absorption necessary to protect your joints during a workout, but we only recommend installing foam mats on a hard, level surface. Installing interlocking foam mats on carpet can result in the tiles slipping or coming apart from one another during your workout. This is possible even on a low-pile carpet, so please be safe and always install your foam mats on a hard, level surface such as wood, tile, cement, or concrete. Because of their high-density composition, EVA foam mats will not easily absorb liquid and they are very easy to clean, which helps prevent your home gym from developing a locker room smell!
