Protect Yourself During Training

Training in any martial art can be really good for your health, but it also presents some dangers, not the least of which are hard falls. Taking steps to keep yourself safe while you train will not only limit the medical bills, but it will help ensure that you have years to enjoy your training and your art. Thick, shock-absorbing martial arts mats are the first step toward making sure your martial arts training is the safest it can be.

Martial arts mats have to do two very important things: they have to support your stance and balance, and they have to absorb shock when you go down. Our Tatami martial arts mats do both and more. We offer the mats in 1/2″, 3/4″, and 1″ thicknesses precisely for balance and cushioning reasons. If you’re a beginner or if you’re working with small children, you’re probably concerned about the falls. A 1″ mat is the way to go. The Tatami finish, mimicking the texture of real Tatami grass mats, provides solid gripping power and the 1″ of EVA foam can help prevent any missteps or throws from resulting in injury.

Now if you’re a well-seasoned artist, you’re more concerned with balance and stance than shock absorption. You’ve figured out how to go down without injuring yourself. Good for you. So the 1/2″ or 3/4″ mat is just right for your advanced practice. Still finished in the Tatami style, it allows you to feel a little more floor for a more confidant stance.

If grappling is your style, it’s Artist’s Choice. Many of our customers prefer the 1/2″ mats for their ability to launch a well-grounded move, but many also prefer the 3/4″ mats since they spend so much time in close proximity with them! It’s up to you, but be assured either thickness is textured in finish and firm enough to get the job done.
